Project

Located on a peninsula in Auckland’s North Shore, Devonport is one of the most iconic villages around the city. This is not only due to its rich Maori and maritime history, but because of the breathtaking sea and city views and the boutique shopping, cafe culture and stunning collection of Victorian Villas around the area.

This small residential project is placed at the intersection between Calliope Road and Victoria Road along the main access to the suburb. It assignment intended to replace and upgrade an existing masonry wall that was damaged and failing after years of exposure and large trees pushing it over.

Design

Due to the exclusivity of the project location, the client decided to use the AB® Fence System with an AB Ashlar Blend™ configuration, which used four different blocks to create a unique look on the panels, keeping all block split faces on the external side of the fence.

The AB®  Fence design consisted of 5 panels at different lengths, having a maximum c/c distance of 3.6 metres. The structure included a castellated finished, with the posts slightly higher than the panels to a maximum height of 2.1 metres. Pile depths were 1.4 metres deep and 600 mm in diameter to provide the right stability.

Installation

To ensure the best possible outcome for the project, the Bowers’ team suggested to Carters, our business partner, to recommend the client the use of an AB® Fence Master Wall Builder. Alicon Limited, led by John Graham, a specialist contractor with multiple years of experience using Allan Block® products and with a particular devotion to the AB Fence® System, was selected to do the job.

The installation was carried out by a small crew of only two people, taking approximately three weeks to complete. A substantial part of the time was spent to remove the existing asphalt pavement and to clean a series of tree roots that could potentially damage the system base in the future. Some areas had to be dug by hand to avoid the damage of adjacent utilities. The rest was business as usual for the Alicon guys.
